We’ve just received delivery of a batch of Main Cliff posters. These stunning pieces of art can be purchased for £6.95 initially from V12 Outdoor in Llanberis and very soon from other key climbing shops and climbing walls around the UK.
The story behind the poster is this: After the Gogarth North guide had gone to the printers, Al Williams (Ground Up’s designer) decided on a whim to piece together a montage of all the separate Main Cliff topos into one monster spread showing the cliff in all its magnificence. He put it all together in an A2 poster format with a list of routes underneath and printed off a couple of copies, the idea being that they would provide a good piece of promotion for the new guide. He dropped a copy off in the Outside shop in Hathersage and the Crag X shop in Sheffield.
A week later Al walked into the Hathersage Outside shop to be greeted by an excited throng of people crowded round the poster, which had been put next to the main counter. Everybody wanted to know where to get a copy and soon the Ground Up email inbox started filling up with requests and enquiries about the poster.
“Mick Ryan from UKClimbing.com called me out of the blue, raving about the poster and urging me to get a job lot printed up. That was it, we decided to go for it, and after a bit more technical tinkering at Al’s end it was ready for the printers.” Commented Ground Up editor Simon Panton, before adding:
“You can really lose yourself in it. I’ve got one on the wall of my office and I keep finding myself gazing at it. Tracing the lines of previous adventures and wondering what lies in store on the routes I have yet to do. It’s such an impressive, inspiring piece of rock, to see it presented like this is a real treat.”
