Gogarth is a remarkable cliff, and one that inspires a deep sense of connection amongst all who climb upon its many and varied crags. Our intention is to reflect the romance and the adventure of the place in the forthcoming guidebook. In order to do that we are looking for pieces of writing that reveal the very special nature of crag and the character of the climbers who have come to test themselves in this challenging environment.
To this end a writing competition has been set up. All entries are welcome, from seasoned campaigners to first time novices. You should submit a piece of no more than 1000 words with relevance to Gogarth. Each piece will be marked by a panel of judges consisting of people such as: Ed Douglas, the Ground Up directors (Simon Panton, Rob Wilson, Graham Desroy, Simon Marsh) and others. The writing will be judged against the following criteria:
· Relevance to Gogarth (history, first ascent, epic ascent, your best day out etc.)
· Writing style
· Originality
· Humour
· Ethics (0 marks for article about headpointing)
Each piece should be submitted via email to info@groundupclimbing.com or sent by post (3 copies) to Simon Panton, 5, Olgra Terrace, Llanberis, Gwynedd, LL55 4HS, to have arrived by midnight 01/10/07 for inclusion in the competition. Please include the following information with your submission: title of piece, your name and address, plus email and telephone no.
It is anticipated that the winners will be notified by the weekend of 27/10/07. However, should we receive a staggering amount of material then this date may be postponed.
The overall winner will receive the original John Redhead artwork used for the ‘Never Mind the Puffins’ poster at the Gogarth festival. Other prizes will also be given out from DMM, V12 Outdoor and the BMC.
The winning piece will be included in the forthcoming Ground Up Gogarth guidebook. Edited sections of other works may also be included in the guide. You are therefore requested that any submission is for the guide and should not be submitted elsewhere, at least until after the publication of the guide.
News on the progress of the competition, winner’s etc. will be posted here on this website, with other websites such as the Gogarth Wiki, UKClimbing.com, DMM, BMC and V12outdoor.com also receiving news updates.
Good luck and happy climbing
