A much-needed re-equipping campaign has started in the Dinorwig slate quarries. 12mm stainless steel bolts are being used to replace aging insitu protection, belays and lower-offs. A full compliment of dedicated equipment has been purchased using funds from the sale of the old Slate guidebook. This includes a battery drill, a petrol drill and all the necessary tools to install new bolts and remove old ones. The equipment is being stored at the V12 Outdoor shop in Llanberis, and at the Indi Climbing Wall on Anglesey.
The activities are being coordinated and supported by local climbers, retailers and climbing walls. Anyone keen to help out with the re-equipping should contact the staff in V12 Outdoor shop (01286 871534), Jon Ratcliffe at the Indi Climbing Wall (01248 716058) or Chris Parkin via the cheque address given below.
North Wales Slate guide co-author, Mark Reeves is hosting a re-equipping update page on his website giving details of all the routes that have been sorted out.
Follow this link to see it: Safe Slate.
All re-equipping work should be reported to Mark via his website contact page.
In order to raise the profile of the work and raise funds the remaining stock of the old Slate climbing guide is being given away! Anyone donating £5 or more to the fund will receive a free copy of the book. The donation scheme will be operating through the following locations in the North Wales area: V12 Outdoor, Joe Browns, and the Beacon Climbing Centre.
Alternatively, send cheque donations to: NW Slate Llysfaen, Lon Brynteg, Llandegfan, Menai Bridge, LL59 5NU. Please make cheques payable to: N W Slate (and add £1.50pp to your donation of £5 or more if you want to receive a copy of the old guidebook).
